Comparing sizes in the solar system

Just to prove that I wouldn't pass an exclusively science site by, I wanted to let everyone know about a website that allows students to compare sizes of the eight planets (R.I.P. Pluto) and much, much more.

Embed your Powerpoints

I just signed up for a free service called authorSTREAM, which I found by way of Larry Ferlazzo's ESL blog. authorSTREAM allows you to upload Powerpoint Presentations (with sound if you like) to be viewed on their site or embedded in your own blog or website. I was thinking of a blog that had each Powerpoint that had been shown to the students right there to be accessed at any time.

Ways around the website blocker

I saw this post on the TechLearning.com IT-Guy help page. It is about ways to show videos, that would ordinarily be blocked at school, to your students.

Free University Lectures

Mr. Renkwitz clued me in to Stumble!, a Firefox add-on that can only be described as priceless. It takes you to random websites that are found based on your selected interests. While I was Stumble!-ing I came upon a website that provides links to a multitude of university lectures from the United States and around the world. The lectures are on Physics, Computer Science and Mathematics and they are in video, audio and notes form. A lot of the free MIT lectures that Mr. Renkwitz told us about are linked to on the site as well. Be sure to check out the black hole lecture from CalTech.

Calculators at home

One of the problems that I had last year was with assigning students homework that they needed a graphing calculator to complete. The majority of my students don't own a TI-83 or 84. I just found two sites online that should fix this problem. One offers a graphing calculator that you can use online. The other offers a free download of a graphing calculator program.

Cheap Computers

This site jumped out at me after hearing people talk about finding affordable laptops and desktops to use with their projectors and in their classrooms. The company sells refurbished computers and targets educators and schools. Since its a company with nothing free to offer I'm not going to put it in our list of links.

Instructions

Put any interesting links into a post along with a little description about why you think it is interesting. If you want, you can add the link to the column on the left. If not, we'll make sure that it gets there. The first links that have been added are Mr. Renkwitz's site, Jim Heister's blog and David Lamparter's site.
